Products for handling gas bottles from DENIOS

Gas cylinders are widely used in many industries and fulfil a variety of functions. However, despite their usefulness, they also harbour considerable risks if they are handled incorrectly. Here we highlight the potential dangers that gas cylinders can pose and offer comprehensive rules of conduct for avoiding accidents. We also present specialised products that enable gas cylinders to be handled safely.

Why is the correct handling of gas cylinders so important?

Gas cylinders contain pressurised gases. They epitomise dangerous contents and substances. It is therefore essential to handle, transport and store gas cylinders safely and in accordance with the law in order to prevent accidents.

What risks do gas cylinders pose?

Tearing off the valve

The valve is the weakest point and must be protected by a valve protection cap. If the valve is torn off and the contents of the bottle suddenly escape, the bottle can act like a projectile and cause serious damage, even penetrating concrete walls.

Uncontrolled leakage of gas

Valves that are not fully closed or small leaks can cause gas to escape unnoticed. Flammable gases can form explosive gas mixtures that can be ignited by simple ignition sources such as light switches. Depending on the gas density, the danger is highest either in cellars (heavy gases) or in attics (light gases).

Fires with pure oxygen

Pure oxygen is a powerful fire accelerant. Therefore, oxygen cylinder valves must not be greased or oiled. Always use clean, oil-free tools. If pure oxygen escapes, other objects can ignite, especially if they are oily or dusty.

Rules of conduct to prevent accidents

To prevent accidents, the following rules of conduct should be observed:

  • Gas cylinders should be secured against tipping over, e.g. with chains on the wall or special pallets.

  • Valve protection caps should be used at all times, including during storage and transport.

  • Cylinders should not be thrown and should only be transported with a crane if they are on a pallet.

  • Do not use tools to force open valves.

  • Gas cylinders should be stored in well-ventilated areas, preferably outdoors.

  • Transport people and gas cylinders separately - gas cylinders should not be transported together with people in lifts.

  • Clean tools for oxygen cylinders: Only use clean, oil-free tools.
